ESCAPE AND RETURN – EXHIBITION by PATRICK SAMUEL
"Art is my medium of escape; from the noise, the lights, the fumes and the constant stream of information. It’s deafening and blinding. The pushing and the shoving, and the race to get everywhere first and have everything now. I want it all to stop. Painting and drawing lets me soar past the planets, where I can let my hands glide across the stars as I say goodbye to it all. Watch it fade away. And I do get that far when I realise how much I’d leave behind back on Earth; the trees, the sound of laughter and the colour of sound, the colourable real, the mythical and fantastic. I realise how much I’d miss it all. How much I’d miss you. This is my return."
Patrick Samuel is an emerging artist, working primarily with pastels and graphite pencils, but he also enjoys experimenting with water colours, acrylics, glass and oil paints. Being on the autistic spectrum with Asperger’s Syndrome, Patrick is stimulated by bold, contrasting colours, intricate details, multiple textures, and varying shades of light and dark.
When: Tuesday 07 November – Saturday 02 December, 10am – 5pm
Where: The Dugdale, 39 London Road, Enfield EN2 6DS

PARAKEETS RUIN WINE HARVEST
Hungry parakeets have severely dented the wine harvest at London’s only commercial vineyard since medieval times at Forty Hall Farm with 10 acres of land grown with vines.
As well as the parakeets, the weather was also blamed for the shortfall in the crop. Forty Hall produced a yield of 3.2 tonnes this year, compared with 4.9 tonnes in 2016, but the maturing vines should have seen production rise.
There are estimated to be up to 50,000 parakeets living in Britain, mainly in London and north Kent.

EVERYDAY JUNK TO ART – WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND
Now in its 14th year Recycle Week is a celebration of recycling, with this year's theme being ’Recycling - It’s Worth It!’
Turn that empty coke can into a pair of dazzling bling earrings, or that old and warped vinyl record into a wall-mounted clock.
Tin cans are transformed into mini herb gardens, jars into tealight holders and newspapers used for wrapping gifts. A recycled shampoo bottle could be transformed into a football shirt, or egg shells could be used to generate electricity.
Recycle Week is organised by WRAP under the Recycle Now brand. The aim of the week is to encourage the public to recycle more, by demonstrating the benefits of recycling items from all around the home. How recycling one item could lead to the creation of another is the campaign’s focal point.
Enfield Council is a proud supporter of Recycle Week.
Dates: 25 September – 1 October 2017

TURN YOUR HAIR INTO A WIG FOR CHILDREN SUFFERING FROM HAIRLOSS DUE TO CANCER TREATMENT
Indiana Seitsonen-Light, who is in Year 3 at Forty Hill Church of England School, grew his hair for two years so once cut, his hair could be made into a wig for children who have lost theirs through treatment for cancer.
Inspired by the personal tragedy of losing his grandfather and great-aunt to the devastating disease, plucky Indiana stood up to bullies calling him to have his hair trimmed.
Indiana had his hair cut at Toni& Guy in Enfield Town, and it has been sent to The Little Princess Trust for children with cancer.
It is hoped that others will be inspired to donate their own hair to the charity, and that doing so can change the lives of those with cancer.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR IN WEMBLEY
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has played down the effect of playing at Wembley after his side dropped more points at the national stadium.
Spurs were frustrated as they played a goalless draw with a dogged Swansea team to extend their search for a league win at Wembley.
Despite an excellent 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League midweek in west London, Spurs have yet to record a home win in the Premier League this term.
Defeat to Chelsea and draws with Burnley and now Swansea mean Pochettino’s side have already dropped seven points at their temporary home this term.
Pochettino said: “We are only spending one season here so maybe after that everyone can say if Wembley was a problem or not. Today we are at Wembley, White Hart Lane is in history and we are building a new stadium that will be fantastic.
“We cannot compare this season to last season, all the clubs are different, we are different, we have a new squad. The reality is that we have dropped a lot of points after three games, but I am not worried, playing in the way we are we will win a lot of games.”

GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF CONTESTANT FROM ENFIELD It was make or break for superstitious Chuen-Yan who vowed to apply to take part in the eighth series of The Great British Bake Off – because eight is her lucky number. And the 46-year-old, who moved to the UK when she was two from Hong Kong, now living in Enfield, admits she still finds it ‘totally surreal’ that she is part of the latest line-up. “I’ve been baking for ten years and I’ve got really into it,” the 46-year-old explains. “And the more I got into it, the more my friends kept telling me to apply. They said my personality would suit the tent. Overjoyed to have been chosen, Yan says nothing, however, could prepare her for the moment she arrived at the Bake Off location. “I was like a rabbit caught in a headlight for the entire day,” she admits. “But I work in a high profile laboratory and you have to show a cool exterior. If you panic in the lab, everyone else does. In the tent, I tried to keep a cool exterior, too, even though I was feeling apprehensive inside!” Incredibly excited her big secret that she is going to be on GBBO is finally out, Yan is still unsure if she would ever swap her life as a scientist for a role in a bakery. “I am a cancer scientist and that’s my path,” she adds. “That is what I am comfortable with and to find yourself in the tent being critiqued made you feel like a fish out of water. But how lucky am I? Click here to read more about Chuen-Yan and The Great British Bake Off. [Last updated 31 August 2017] |

POINTS OF JUNCTURE - EXHIBITION by COS AHMET The nature of Cos Ahmet’s work is centred around the body, and more specifically, his own. Some of his works are embodiments, in the form of casts of his body. Other times, there is an absence of the body, and is either implied or related to a specific space. Recurring themes of self, identity, gender and memory are pervasive features in much of his work. This exhibition combines existing works, with newly commissioned pieces taking their inspiration from the textile connections upon which Forty Hall was built, delving into the layers of dialogue to create a ‘material identity’. When: 27 July - 22 October, Thursdays to Sundays, 11am - 5pm Where: Forty Hall, Forty Hill, Enfield, EN2 9HA Click here or on one of the pictures for details. [Last updated 20 July 2017] |

VARIATIONS OF POINTE II
Variations of Pointe II is a new triple bill program. It includes stunning Repertoire Ballet, a hilarious new age twist inspired by Austin Powers as well as Niewelt's new and breathtaking neo-classical creation ''Consequential Gaps''.
The dancers come from Scotland, England, Ireland, France, Hungary and Germany and this international cast of stars will move you with every step they take.
In the first part the audience will see sections of famous, yet not widely seen classics such as ''Le spectre de la Rose'', ''La Peri'' and ''La Sylphide''. The second part of this production will show that Ballet does not have to be bland. Inspired by the Austin Powers movies this new age comedy ballet combines classical technique with fun characters to entertain and introduce new dance audience to ballet. Niewelt's newest creation ''Consequential Gaps'' finalizes the triple bill.
To the music of great composers such as J.S.Bach he creates a new thrilling, extravagant yet breathtakingly clean masterpiece.
All that is left after forcing his team of dancers to the limit of the music will be the consequence.
Will it be enough to close the gap between stage and audience?
When: 21 July 2017 @ 7.30pm
Where: Millfield Theatre, Silver Street, Edmonton N18 1PJ

ENFIELD HAS THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF FLY-TIPPERS
A new digital map has revealed the worst boroughs in London for fly-tipping – with Enfield coming out top.
There were 70,930 cases of fly-tipping in Enfield in the year to March 2016, equivalent to 22 per cent of its population, according to statistics from the Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.
This made the north London borough not just the worst offender in London but in the UK.
An Enfield Council spokesperson said that the figures for the borough were so high because they include all dumped waste and not just fly-tips reported by residents.
The spokesperson added: “What the figures do show is that Enfield Council is the most pro-active council in the country when it comes to dealing with fly tippers and keeping our streets clean. The data reflect that we are vigorous in our approach to littering across the borough.
“We aim to clear all reported fly tips within four hours of them reported. We also have an extensive enforcement programme in place for people caught fly tipping and have issued over 900 fixed penalty notices over the last 12 months for dumped waste and fly tipping.

MOVE MORE Enfield's Move More campaign aims to get everyone to make one or two small changes a day in their routine to help increase their physical activity. The campaign highlights how easy it is to incorporate a little more activity into your life, and how moving more can help to significantly reduce the chances that you will suffer from a number of life threatening conditions such as heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. There are many ways of keeping fit and living a healthy lifestyle without even joining a gym. You can go for a leisurely walk, get off the bus a stop early or cycle within your local area. These are some of the great ways to meet and socialise with new people with the aid of keeping yourself fit. Physical activity can also assist with weight loss and help strengthen your immune system against coughs and colds. Other benefits include boosting your overall energy levels and reducing the likelihood of suffering from some mental health conditions such as depression. Whether you're young or old; any form of physical exercise will benefit your health in the long term and should be done regularly. Being more active even for just 10 minutes, three times a day, can significantly improve your health and wellbeing. |

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS – EXPLORING MULTI-CULTURAL LONDON
Charlie Phillips’ collection of images of Notting Hill in the 1960s and ‘70s have become prized for the way they recorded a unique moment in British history, capturing a time and a place that was in transition.
Charlie’s images are full of the atmosphere of that time. Here are photographs of slum housing, of children on the streets, of traders, of funerals, of churchgoers, of shebeens and of the ordinary lives of people, black and white. In spite of hardship and poverty their faces tell us of spirit and humanity.
Charlie Phillips was born in Kingston, Jamaica and came to Notting Hill in 1956 where he grew up against a background of hostility and prejudice in a part of London where racism, Rachmanism, rioting and sus laws, affected many people. When he was eleven he was given a Kodak Brownie by a black American serviceman and started snapping his friends and neighbours, particularly from the Caribbean Community. He developed the pictures in the bath at home, late at night when his parents had gone to bed. They were only too glad that he was not out on the streets at night and in any danger.
As a young man he travelled all over Europe. In 1968/9 he took photographs of the student riots in Paris and Rome. He had his first exhibition in Milan in 1972 where he showed photographs portraying the frustrations and difficulties of urban migrant workers. Much of his work, at that time and later, was published in magazines such as Stern, Harper’s Bazaar, Life and Vogue as well as Italian and Swiss journals. Later Charlie admits to being a bit of a paparazzo and managed to take pictures of people like Gina Lollobrigida, Omar Sharif and later Muhammed Ali.
"Charlie Phillips is the greatest London photographer you've never heard of – and some of his best works are only just being rediscovered" (Time Out -2015)
When: Exhibition open daily until Saturday 13 May.

A WALK IN THE PARK – GUNPOWDER PARK AND SEWARDSTONE EXPLORER
This week's hand-picked walk as part of Lee Valley Regional Park's 50th Anniversary explores the transformed, exciting country park where people, wildlife and the arts coexist in a rather more peaceful environment.
An ex MOD site Gunpowder Park was closed to the public for over 100 years and was shrouded in mystery for many years. Secret testing went on behind security fences until the Lee Valley Park converted the site into a public space.
Walkers love this area due to the network of all-weather paths, and a permissive bridle way which welcomes horse riders through the summer months. The Park is also home to a state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly field station. This amazing building with its grass roof reflects the Park’s industrial heritage. Land forms demonstrate the history of the site and merge with art in the Park.
The site is also excellent for Wildlife. You might hear the song of the Skylark or see Yellowhammers in the hedgerows. Look out for Owl boxes as you go round and information on the night time creatures - this is a good site for bats.
When: Sunday 09 April 2017; 10:30-12:30
Where: Meet at Gunpowder Car Park, Sewardstone Road, Enfield, EN9 3GP

SIMON WESTON: MY LIFE, MY STORY
It was the conflict of a generation and one that many will never forget. On the second of April 1982 Argentina invaded the Falklands Islands.
The Islands, which had been controlled by Great Britain for nearly 150 years, became a battle ground and the UK government were quick to defend both the Islands and its inhabitants. What was to follow saw the deaths of 655 Argentinian Soldiers and 255 British Servicemen.
Amongst those who were sent to the conflict was Simon Weston CBE.
In one of the most horrific moments of the conflict the RFA Sir Galahad was bombed by two Argentinian planes, aboard at the time was Simon. This was an event which would change his life forever.
Eventually, and against the odds, Simon escaped the burning and buckled ship, but only after suffering 46% burns to his body.
Now after his 2015 Sell-Out UK tour Simon returns to the stage for a second time to continue sharing his incredible life story.
Simon Weston; My Life, My Story is a truly inspirational show about one man’s journey from the front line of war, being on the edge of death, to today being a happy and contented Father, Grandfather and national treasure.

T.REXTASY – THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR
Marc Bolan, with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic stars of the original glam rock era. It’s hard to believe that 40 years have now passed since Marc’s tragic fatal car accident and fans have mourned the loss of a truly individual, inspirational talent ever since.
T.Rextasy has been performing around the world for over 20 years, a career that ironically outlives Marc’s very own T.Rex. They have become widely accepted as the world’s only official tribute show dedicated to Marc Bolan & T.Rex, and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc’s family, estate and catalogue management, not to mention original members of T.Rex. The band has been described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute’.
This year T.rextasy is celebrating Marc’s life and works with a special commemorative tour. Truly a rock’n’roll concert for all ages - If you would like to know exactly what a Marc Bolan concert was like in the 1970s, this show is for you!

FLY TIPPING
FLY-TIPPERS are to be slapped with greater fines after Enfield Council doubled its penalty charge rate.
The previous rate stood at £200; however, those littering Enfield’s streets will now face fines of £400. The increase was made possible as a result of new powers under the Deposit of Waste Regulations 2016.
The council spends £4.5million a year keeping the borough clean and residents are absolutely sick and tired of putting up with people who think it is okay to dump all manner of rubbish on our streets.

NEW TRAMPOLINE PARK
